Some ear medications can cause deafness!
It is well known amongst veterinary dermatologists that ear medications containing gentamicin can cause deafness in some dogs and cats. The mechanism for this is not understood. Deafness, usually temporary, can occur after the first dose of gentamicin-containing ear medications or after several days of use. Personally, I have seen this in varying breeds to include Miniature Schnauzers, Coton de Tulea, Mastiffs, and Retrievers. Gentamicin is an antibiotic used in rod bacterial infections for Pseudomonas and Proteus spp. In some patients, a ruptured ear drum (tympanic membrane) may have been an underlying factor, yet this is not true for others. Because of this “idiosyncratic” reaction of deafness, most veterinary dermatologists avoid using gentamicin-containing ear medications unless absolutely necessary.
