Swelling under the eye? It may not be the eye!

Facial swelling just below the eye is often caused by a tooth root abscess, especially the upper 4th premolar (that big chewing tooth in dogs).
And here’s the tricky part…
Many dogs are still eating.
They’re still wagging.
But they are NOT pain-free.
⚠️ What to watch for:
• Swelling under the eye
• A small draining hole beneath the eye
• Bad breath
• Dropping food
• Chewing on one side
• Subtle behavior changes
Antibiotics may make the swelling go down temporarily — but they do not fix the infected tooth. Definitive treatment requires extraction or root canal therapy, along with dental radiographs to confirm the diagnosis.
Dental pain is quiet. Dogs are stoic.
But untreated infection only worsens.
